Now–2 years

Agents become the operating layer between intent and code

Software work increasingly begins with a task, specification, or conversation rather than a file and cursor. Agents plan changes, inspect repositories, generate implementation, run tools, test results, and iterate across complete workflows.

DevelopmentRepositories become environments that agents navigate continuously rather than collections of files humans edit one at a time.
ControlPermissions, review boundaries, context management, and test infrastructure become central parts of the development stack.
Human roleDevelopers spend more time defining outcomes, decomposing problems, reviewing behavior, and deciding when an autonomous system has done enough.
3–5 years

Software becomes cheaper to create and more valuable to trust

As implementation becomes abundant, the scarce capabilities move upward: product judgment, verification, provenance, security, operations, domain knowledge, and the ability to maintain systems whose code may have been generated faster than any team could write it.

EconomicsThe cost of producing a first version falls while the value of dependable operation, integration, and stewardship rises.
InfrastructureTesting, policy enforcement, provenance, observability, and automated review become first-class components of AI-native development.
OrganizationsSmaller teams build larger systems, and more domain experts become direct participants in software creation.
Beyond

Software becomes personal, temporary, and generated on demand

When useful software can be produced from a conversation, many applications no longer need to begin as products. A person or organization can create a tool for one workflow, one event, one customer, or one moment—and replace it when the need changes.

ProductsThe boundary between using software and creating software continues to disappear.
MarketsSome packaged applications give way to adaptable systems that generate interfaces and workflows around the user.
CultureSoftware literacy shifts from knowing how to code toward knowing how to express intent, evaluate behavior, and direct computational systems.
The enduring shift

For most of computing history, people learned the language of machines in order to build software. Vibe coding reverses that relationship: machines increasingly work from human language, human goals, and human judgment. That change is larger than any single model or tool.
